Powering Up: Truxton Dairy Showcases Solar Energy

When: Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Where: Twin Oaks Dairy

As a certified organic dairy, Bob, Rick and Kathie Arnold at Twin Oaks Dairy already know how to produce milk sustainably. But figuring out a way to produce sustainable energy required the help of some outside experts. Last year, the Arnolds worked with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the USDA to finance a solar electric system to power their home and farm operation. Triangle Electric Systems in Plattsburgh, NY installed the 27.6-kilowatt PV (solar electric) system, which is sized to produce 107% of the annual electrical energy needed at Twin Oaks' main farmstead. For those times when the energy produced by the panels is greater than the needs of the farm, the excess flows into the utility grid. The Arnolds will offer a tour of their new system on Tuesday, August 24th, from 10am – noon. Detailed information about farm energy audits, grants and incentives will be available. The tour is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Small Farms Energy Work Team, a project of the Cornell Small Farms Program, and the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA). To register, contact Violet Stone at 607-255-9227 or e-mail vws7@cornell.edu

You'll be cheered, fed, and celebrated for a ride you'll never forget. This 12th Annual Ithaca tradition brings together hundreds of riders, volunteers, and sponsors. The Ride has raised almost $1.5 million for local HIV/AIDS services in its eleven-year history. In 2009, we celebrated the 11th anniversary of the ride and raised over $250,000. This year, facing major state cuts in STAP's funding, we are hoping to be as successful as we have been in the past. For more information Click Here!
